Preparing For Disaster

Preparing For Disaster

There is no excuse for not preparing for disaster. You can debate the chances of world ending disaster, but you cannot debate the occurrence of natural disasters.

They happen, they happen regularly, and they often cause disruption of utilities and food resources for days.

How long can you and your family live without food and water? How will you stay safe and warm? How will you provide emergency care in the event of an injury? These are all things you should be concerned about and prepare for.

Creating a Food Supply when Preparing for Disaster

It doesn’t take a lot of extra money to create a stockpile of food that will carry you through a natural disaster. You aren’t trying to accumulate enough to live for years, just several days while the immediate danger is present. The best foods to purchase when preparing for disaster are the ones that last for months in dry storage. Avoid any foods that require refrigeration either for storage or after opening. Remember to rotate your stockpile often to use up those items that are nearing their expiration dates and replace them with fresh stock.

How to Keep Water when Preparing for Disaster

Water is the most important element in a survival kit. You can’t live without it. You can do without soft drinks, coffee, tea or juice, but you will not survive without fresh, clean water. Don’t count on tap water being available when preparing for disaster. Even if you live in a city where clean water is piped through your home, a natural disaster may disrupt service or worse, contaminate the water supply. If you live in a rural area where a well is your source of household water and you have no manual pump outside, an electrical outage will terminate your pump and cut off your supply.

You can only live 3 days without water, and after 1 day serious dehydration sets in and causes severe damage to your organs. It is vital to have enough water to provide for yourself and your family in the event of even minor disasters. Always have at least one gallon of water per day for every member of your family on hand. It is a good idea to plan for enough food and water for a week. Electrical outages caused by storms frequently last for 3 to 7 days and it is best to begin preparing for disaster before it hits. You should never wait until the event occurs. Stores will sell out of the most important items in hours, sometimes even minutes and there will be no water, food or other survival items available.

Some other things to include in your kit when preparing for disaster are blankets and a first aid kit to attend to any injuries from debris or falls. Keep plenty of batteries and flashlights in your kit and don’t forget to include a non-electric can opener. Another item that is very helpful is a simple whistle. It will let you signal for help. Include garbage bags and moist towelettes in your disaster kit when preparing for disaster so you can stay clean and keep the area sanitary.
