Historically, nature has always provided us with the most compelling reasons for preparing for disaster.
When catastrophic events occur, they can devastate communities and even entire states.
Getting help can take weeks if you are deep inside the disaster zone.
Most people have seen the affects of a national weather advisory. Regardless of where you live, there are certain events that send everyone to the store to begin preparing for disaster that is imminent. How much can you really get in one shopping trip? Even if you could manage to get a few days of supplies in one haul, the likelihood is that the stores would be empty by the time you got there. It happens quickly.
When to begin Preparing for Disaster
However, even that can’t compare to the fact that some disasters simply are not predictable to a degree that would allow you to run out for a few supplies. Earthquakes are one of those events that you can’t spend a few minutes before the event getting food and water to survive. Even with the tremendous advances in technology, earthquakes elude us. They happen almost without warning. If you haven’t been preparing for disaster long before the event happens, you are going to be stuck in the middle of a massive devastation with no food, no water and possibly no shelter.
How To Begin Preparing For Disaster
An earthquake presents both safety and survival problems. The immediate danger is the danger of falling debris in an earthquake. Early elements of preparing for disaster resulting from an earthquake involve a little planning for possibilities. If you live in an area where earthquakes are likely, always make sure that any large, dangerous items are secured and not easily shaken off of shelves and walls.
Remember that even small items can become bullets or burst apart into flying shrapnel in an earthquake environment. Don’t forget large items like furnaces and water heaters that can not only become flying missiles, but may also explode if tossed by the force of an earthquake.
Locate areas in your home that are safe zones. Leave upper floors if possible and get to a ground floor level. Stay away from windows and get under strong structures such as a desk to protect yourself from falling items. Protect yourself by practicing the earthquake drill for Drop , Cover and Hold on.
The next step in preparing for disaster caused by earthquakes is long term survival. It can take days or weeks to recover from just a small earthquake. A large quake can cause complete devastation that lasts for months. During that time getting fresh water and food is difficult. You should have enough food supplies and bottled water to provide for your family for at least three months or more. The longer the better, because there is no real way to judge how long it will take to recover from an earthquake, and missing your target needs by three or more days can mean the difference between life and death.
Spending a little time each day to learn about the right way to protect your family by preparing for disaster will give you the peace of mind of knowing you can cope with anything man or nature can deliver.
